Volvo XC60 Competitive Comparison

Volvo XC60 vs. Audi Q5, Lexus RX, and BMW X3

Compare compact luxury SUVs for your Seattle-area drives

The Volvo XC60 is a superb selection for Seattle drivers seeking luxury and versatility without imposing space requirements. It offers upscale accommodations, engaging performance, and a wealth of appealing amenities. And with Volvo's signature sophistication and craftsmanship, the XC60 is one of the most compelling premium crossovers in its class.

Of course, compact utility vehicles comprise the industry's most popular segment, with myriad options to choose from. Still, the Volvo XC60 offers a complete package that's tough to beat. Here's a quick look at how it compares in a few important areas to three prominent class competitors, the Audi Q5, Lexus RX 350, and BMW X3.

Volvo XC60 vs. Audi Q5

  • While the Volvo XC60 and Audi Q5 have similarly sized cabins, the XC60 offers a bit more front legroom and rear headroom. However, if cargo space is a priority-as it is with many SUV shoppers, the comparison isn't as close. The XC60 offers 29.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 64.6 with the second row folded. The Q5's cargo area measurements fall short at 25.6-54.1 cubic feet.

  • The XC60 and Q5 are nicely equipped with several standard technologies. However, many features are more accessible on the XC60. It comes standard with Navigation, Lane-Keep Assist, and wireless smartphone charging-amenities requiring a higher trim level in the Q5.

  • The XC60 B5 equips a mild-hybrid turbocharged four-cylinder with 247 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the Audi Q5's 40 TFSI makes 201 hp and 236 lb-ft. The XC60 B6 adds a supercharger to the turbo-four, boosting output to 295 horsepower and 310. The Q5's commensurate 45 TFSI engine is rated at 261 horsepower and 273 lb-ft. Both models have plug-in hybrid options. But the XC60 Recharge (455 hp, 523 lb-ft; EPA-est. 35-mile electric range) boasts more power and range than the Audi Q5 55 TFSI e (362 hp, 369 lb-ft; EPA-est. 23-mile electric range).

Volvo XC60 vs. Lexus RX 350

  • The Volvo XC60 offers a bit more passenger volume than the Lexus RX 350 (103 vs. 99.8 cubic feet). However, the XC60's 29.7-cubic-foot cargo area dwarves the RX 350's, which offers just 16 cubes. For maximum cargo capacity, the XC60 doubles what the RX 350 offers (64 vs. 32 cubic feet).

  • The XC60's turbo-and-supercharged B6 engine has the same horsepower (295) as the RX 350's V-6, but it makes significantly more torque (310 vs. 267 lb-ft). Are you looking for a powerful yet efficient hybrid? The 455-horsepower XC60 Recharge plug-in hybrid achieves an EPA-estimated 63 MPGe and a pure-electric range estimate of 35 miles. The 308-hp Lexus RX 450h is EPA-rated at 30 mpg and doesn't offer electric-only driving.

  • The Volvo XC60 and Lexus RX are both nicely equipped. However, the XC60 offers more value. It has a lower starting MSRP and comes standard with features that require a higher trim on the Lexus RX, including a 12-inch digital gauge cluster, a panoramic sunroof, a hands-free liftgate, wireless charging, and steering-adaptive front lighting.

Volvo XC60 vs. BMW X3

  • The Volvo XC60 and BMW X3 have similarly sized interior accommodations. However, your passengers will appreciate the XC60's extra legroom on longer trips. The XC60 also offers improved practicality with extra cargo space.

  • The XC60 offers many standard tech features that the X3 charges more for or doesn't offer at all. Examples include oncoming lane Mitigation, run-off road mitigation, rear cross-traffic alert, a 12-inch digital instrument panel, and a driver alertness monitor.

  • The XC60 and X3 have equally matched base turbo-four engines. However, the XC60 also offers a Recharge plug-in hybrid model (455 hp, 523 lb-ft) with 35 miles of pure-electric range. The BMW M40i's 382-hp six-cylinder isn't as powerful and is much less efficient.
