Volvo XC60 vs BMW X3
Compare the Volvo XC60 to the BMW X3
The Volvo XC60 and the BMW X3 are two popular luxury compact SUVs that have garnered a significant following among SEATAC drivers. While both vehicles offer an array of impressive features and benefits, the Volvo XC60 stands out in several key areas when compared to the BMW X3. At Volvo of Tacoma at Fife, we dug into both the XC60 and the BMW X3 to underscore what makes the Volvo an ideal luxury SUV for Seattle and Olympia.
Volvo Continues to Lead Safety
Volvo has a long-standing reputation for its commitment to safety, and the XC60 is no exception. The XC60 has consistently earned high safety ratings, including Top Safety Pick awards from the IIHS and a 5-star overall rating from the NHTSA. In addition, the latest Volvo XC60 is equipped with advanced safety technology, such as Volvo's City Safety system. This includes features like automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and lane-keeping assist. You'll also have intersection and left-turn assists, and a full-speed collision braking system in your new Volvo SUV. While the BMW X3 also offers several safety features, it doesn't offer the same intersection protections, and active cruise control is an optional feature.

Interior Comfort and Design
The Volvo XC60 boasts a beautifully designed interior with high-quality materials and a minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic. The cabin feels luxurious and well-crafted, with an emphasis on comfort and functionality. The seats in the XC60 are loved for their exceptional comfort and support, and the rear seats offer ample legroom. The BMW X3, on the other hand, features a stylish interior, but a sportier bent means less comfortable seats and fewer standard luxury features.

Infotainment and Technology
Volvo's Google-based infotainment system is widely praised for its user-friendliness and responsiveness. The XC60 features a large vertically oriented touchscreen that is intuitive to use, and it comes with standard features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Integrated Google functions include Maps and Music for even easier connectivity. Meanwhile, the BMW X3 also has a competent infotainment system, but some users find it less intuitive and user-friendly compared to Volvo's setup. Specifically, the lack of physical climate control settings makes adjusting to your ideal temperature more challenging while driving around Olympia.
Fuel Efficiency
The 2024 Volvo XC60 offers a range of powertrains, including mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid options, which can significantly improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. The mild hybrid technology, in particular, assists the internal combustion engine, resulting in better fuel economy. In contrast, the BMW X3 offers a range of powerful engines, but without the fuel efficiency of the Volvo. Moreover, the XC60 Recharge offers battery-only range, which isn't availalbe with any BMW X3 model.
Ride Comfort and Suspension
The new Volvo XC60 is known for its smooth and comfortable ride, thanks to its well-tuned suspension system. Volvo's focus on comfort makes it an excellent choice for long highway drives or daily commuting. The BMW X3, while still offering a comfortable ride, leans more towards a sporty and dynamic driving experience, which might not be as appealing on our rough PNW roads.
Premium Features Standard
While the Volvo XC60 comes standard with heated seats and a power-sliding moonroof, similar features are an extra cost on the BMW X3. Furthermore, the XC60 is available with ventilated seats, while the X3 offers no such upgrade.
