Volvo XC60 Competitive Comparison

2023 Volvo XC60 vs. Audi Q5, Lexus RX, and BMW X3: Compare Compact Luxury SUVs near Tacoma

With its classy accommodations, abundant practicality, and engaging driving experience, the 2023 Volvo XC60 is one of the most well-rounded and appealing models in its class. It offers premium amenities, potent performance, and standard driver-assist technologies. And it exhibits Volvo's meticulous craftsmanship and signature Scandinavian sophistication.

The Volvo XC60 is an excellent choice for Seattle-area drivers seeking luxury and versatility in a city-friendly package. While there are myriad options in the compact luxury crossover segment, the Volvo XC60 offers a compellingly complete package that's tough to beat. To provide a few examples, here's a quick look at how it compares in a few key areas to three prominent class competitors, the Audi Q5, Lexus RX 350, and BMW X3.

2023 Volvo XC60 vs. Audi Q5

  • The Volvo XC60 and Audi Q5 offer similar passenger volumes, with the XC60 providing a bit more front legroom and rear headroom. However, if cargo capacity is a priority, the XC60 is appreciably more accommodating, offering a max cargo capacity of 63.3 cubic feet. The Q5 has a maximum of 54.1 cubic feet, dropping to 53.5 cubes when equipped with a sunroof (standard in the XC60).

  • The XC60 and Q5 offer many desirable features drivers expect from a luxury vehicle, including standard technologies. However, integrated navigation, Lane-Keep Assist, and wireless smartphone charging are standard in the XC60. These features require paying more in the Q5.

  • The Volvo XC60 is a mild-hybrid model with a standard B5 turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 247 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The Audi Q5's base engine (40 TFSI) can't keep up, producing 201 horsepower and 236 lb-ft. Upgrading to the XC60 B6 adds a supercharger, increasing performance to 295 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. The Q5's 45 TFSI upgrade is rated at 261 horsepower and 273 lb-ft.

  • Both SUVs offer plug-in hybrid options; however, the XC60 Recharge produces 455 hp and 523 lb-ft and boasts an EPA-estimated 35 miles of pure-electric range. The Audi Q5 55 TFSI e has less power (362 hp, 369 lb-ft) and electric range (EPA-est. 23 miles).

2023 Volvo XC60 vs. Lexus RX 350

  • A recent redesign brings the Lexus RX 350's passenger volume more in line with the Volvo XC60, although the XC60 retains an edge in front and rear legroom. However, the Volvo XC60 still offers significantly more cargo space than RX 350 (63.3 vs. 46.2 cubic feet).

  • While the XC60's base 2.0-liter turbo-four B5 makes less power than the RX 350's 2.4-liter mill (247 vs. 275 hp), the XC60 also offers a 295-horsepower B6 option. Are you shopping for something eco-friendly without sacrificing driving enjoyment? The XC60 Recharge boasts 455 hp and an estimated 35 miles of electric-only range. The RX 350's other option is a 246 hp CVT hybrid.

  • The Volvo XC60 and Lexus RX are both generously equipped. However, despite a lower starting MSRP, the XC60 offers several standard features that require climbing the trim ladder in the RX 350. Examples include a panoramic moonroof, wireless smartphone charging, roof rails, driver-position memory, and front and rear parking sensors.

Volvo XC60 vs. BMW X3

  • While the Volvo XC60 and BMW X3 have similarly sized cabins, passengers will appreciate the  extra legroom in the XC60. The XC60 also offers a bit more cargo space for added practicality.

  • The standard 2.0-liter turbo-four engines in both models are equally matched. However, the XC60 is also available as a Recharge plug-in hybrid model with 455 horsepower, 523 pound-feet of torque, and 35 miles of pure-electric range. The BMW X3 M40i's six-cylinder engine (382 hp, 369 lb-ft) isn't as powerful and is far less efficient.

  • The XC60 gives drivers more for their money, including many standard features that are either optional in the BMW X3 or not available at all. Notable examples include a panoramic moonroof, adaptive steering, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, a 12-inch digital instrument panel, and heated front seats.
