2023 Volvo XC40 vs. Audi Q3, Lexus UX, and BMW X1: Compare Small Luxury Crossovers in Tacoma

Are you shopping for a luxurious crossover with great everyday practicality and minimal space requirements? The Volvo XC40 is an excellent selection, offering upscale accommodations, flexible cargo space, and high-tech features in a sporty and sophisticated package. A Car and Driver "Editor's Choice" with a nearly perfect 9.5/10 rating, the 2023 XC40 delivers a smooth yet engaging driving experience with impressive handling and responsive powertrains. And with Volvo's signature Scandinavian craftsmanship on full display, it's one of the most appealing options in the subcompact luxury crossover class.

While Seattle-area drivers have no shortage of options in the populated segment, the 2023 Volvo XC40 offers a compelling and well-rounded experience that's difficult for others to match. To give you a few examples, here's a look at how it measures up in a few key areas to three prominent class competitors, the Audi Q3, Lexus UX, and BMW X1.

2023 Volvo XC40 vs. Audi Q3

  • While the Volvo XC40 and Audi Q3 are both powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, the XC40 B4 (194 horsepower, 221 pound-feet of torque) is a bit more potent than Q3 40 TFSI (184 hp, 221 lb-ft). However, the difference is more dramatic when comparing their upgraded turbo-four options. The Volvo XC40 B5 (247 hp, 258 lb-ft) outmuscles the Q3 45 TFSI (228 hp, 251 lb-ft). Volvo's mild-hybrid architecture also makes it more efficient (EPA-estimated 27 vs. 24 mpg).

  • Are you looking for a versatile and emissions-free solution to your Fife commute? The Volvo XC40 Recharge delivers pure-electric thrills (402 hp, 486 lb-ft), 223 miles of range, and an EPA-estimated 85 MPGe (miles-per-gallon equivalent). The Audi Q3 doesn't have an all-electric option.

  • The Volvo XC40 and Audi Q3 have similar passenger volumes, with the XC40 providing slightly more front legroom. However, the XC40's 57.5 cubic-foot storage area offers more practicality than the Q3's 48 cubes. For the largest cargo, the XC40 boasts an impressive 3,500-pound tow rating, appreciably more than the Q3's 2,200 pounds.

  • Many of the Volvo XC40's standard features require a higher trim/package in the Q3, including Lane-Keeping Aid, a 12-inch digital instrument panel, and Road Sign Information. Other items like driver-attention warning, rear automatic braking, and Google built-in technology aren't available for the Q3 at all.

2023 Volvo XC40 vs. Lexus UX

  • The Volvo XC40 is among the most spacious in its segment, particularly for rear passengers. The XC40's second row boasts three inches more legroom, two inches more headroom, and 3.4 inches more rear shoulder room than the Lexus UX. Additionally, the XC40's 57.4 cubic-foot max cargo area is significantly more spacious than the Lexus UX's 40.4 cubic feet.

  • The Volvo XC40 offers numerous powertrain levels to suit your performance preferences, including a 194-horsepower B4, a 247-hp B5, and a 402-hp pure-electric Recharge model. The Lexus UX has only one powertrain, a 181-horsepower hybrid.

  • While both crossovers offer well-equipped trim levels, the XC40 standard features list includes several amenities that are reserved as options in the Lexus UX. Examples include heated seats, adaptive steering, rain-sensing wipers, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Some standard XC40 amenities aren't offered by the UX, including driver-seat memory, a 12-inch digital gauge cluster, and Oncoming Lane Mitigation.

2023 Volvo XC40 vs. BMW X1

  • The Volvo XC40 and BMW X1 both exhibit impressive driving dynamics and responsive performance. However, the XC40 offers several powertrain options, including the 247-horsepower B5 and 402-horsepower pure-electric Recharge. The BMW X1 has just one 241-hp engine.

  • The Volvo XC40's feature-filled Core trim level ensures Tacoma drivers can enjoy a well-equipped luxury crossover experience regardless of configuration. Standard features include heated front seats, auto-dimming rearview and side mirrors, driver-seat memory, and your choice of Smooth Charcoal Leathe or premium textile upholstery. The Core trim also includes safety features like Lane Keeping Aid and rear automatic braking. All of these features are optional in the BMW X1.
